School/Sport Physicals

Regular physicals are a chance for healthcare providers to discuss important health issues with patients, including children and their parents or guardians. These exams can make sure that the patient is healthy and physically prepared to participate in activities.

Children and adolescents across the United States are facing a mental/behavioral health crisis greater than ever before. Rates of mental illness, behavioral disorders, and suicide among children and adolescents are increasing each year. While this crisis is present across all adolescent populations, the unique stressors faced by students and/or athletes place them at an increased risk.

At SOWEGA Autism & Psychiatry, we will bridge the gap by incorporating a mental health assessment in pre participation physical exams for athletes and school health exams. Your mental health screenings typically will include a series of questions about lifestyle, eating and drinking habits and mental wellness designed to check for potential mood or anxiety disorders, including depression substance abuse, post-traumatic stress and other mental health challenges.

Routine screening for mental health conditions, as well as early diagnosis and
intervention, can change the course of-and perhaps even save-a young person’s life.

“There remain a stigma attached to mental illness in our society, but continuing a
don’t-ask-don’t tell approach is not the way to go. We are losing too many of our children.”
